Youth Development
I don’t buy into the statement: “The youth are our future.” I believe: YOUTH ARE OUR RIGHT NOW! I see youth as leaders ...today. It is from that perspective that I have created several presentations to empower youth to be leaders in the classroom, community, and home.
YOU HAVE CHOICE: In this session, youth see the power they have within themselves to make smart choices that will bring them the life outcomes they desire. Students learn how to make quality decisions that show respect for themselves and others.
YOLO: YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE: Whether it be school, sports, family, work; what you get in return is based upon how much you put in. This session helps students to get out of the rut of living just to get by, but to live to their fullest. Youth see the importance of doing their best, every day, every time.
RPM: REVELATION, PREPARATION, MANIFESTATION: Most students have dreams of what they want to be and how they want their life to turn out. In this presentation, students are introduced to the RPM Process…-REVELATION-PREPARATION-MANIFESTATION. The RPM Process helps students to create a life vision, define the steps toward that vision, and to see the vision become reality.
ROSES & THORNS: In this session, I share part of my life story, growing up with a father addicted to drugs. I help students see that no matter the circumstance that they may have been raised in, they can still reach all they desire. Instead of being depressed that roses have thorns, I help students see that thorns have roses. And just like a rose eventually blossoms into its full beauty, so can they.
THE INS AND OUTS OF LEADERSHIP: Students walk away from this session understanding that they are leaders in large and small ways. They learn that every day is an opportunity to practice their leadership skills even as a young person. Students are affirmed in their respective leadership styles and the strengths and weaknesses of that style. Students learn when their leadership style may be IN and when it may be OUT based upon the task at hand.
ABSTAIN TO ATTAIN: This session focuses on abstinence and how choosing abstinence can help them attain their goals. Trained in the evidence-based Promoting Health Among Teens (PHAT) curriculum, I use the practical, medically and theoretically sound information from this curriculum to help students see the connection between abstinence and reaching their goals. This presentation can be modified for girls only, boys only, or combined groups.
RESOLVED TO BE INVOLVED: Public policies and laws are made about youth, but not often with youth. For the most part, youth are not involved in public policy because they can’t vote. For this reason, politicians and other community leaders do not often listen to the views of youth. I believe this is one of the reasons for voter apathy when students become eligible to vote. They have not been exposed to how to be involved. This session offers youth a look at how they can be empowered to use their voice and get involved with issues and policies that impact their generation. I also discuss the importance of community service and encourage them to have the resolve to be involved in their community.
Note: Note: The descriptions offer a general overview of the presentations and workshops, but can be modified to meet the needs of your youth group.
